It’s Barenaked Jazz this week as our featured artist Jon Matthews pays tribute to one of his most favourite bands ever – the Barenaked Ladies, due to perform next week in PEI! We’re stacking the stage big time with David Gordon , Shawndo IronDeryl Gallant and Kirk White all helping Jon perform some of the best BNL hits and some rarities too, mostly as you remember them, but opening up in a few spots for solos and improvisation. And the second set is an open jam. Come early if you’d like to have a seat!

Jon Matthews is a multitalented and sought-after music producer, recording engineer, singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He operates an award-winning recording studio, The Sound Mill, in addition to performing regularly in Canada and the US as a solo artist and sideman. Jon is Music PEI‘s reigning Producer of the Year for the fourth consecutive time, a 6-time nominee for ECMA ‘Studio Engineer of the Year’, and recipient of the 2013 ECMA Stompin’ Tom Connors award, in recognition of his long-term contributions to the east coast music industry. His studio has been named Music PEI’s ‘Studio of the Year’ multiple times, and is a five-time nominee for ECMA’s ‘Studio of the Year’. Jon has played for an international TV audience of millions on Live! With Regis and Kelly and performs over 100 live dates a year in addition to his busy studio schedule.

Formed 1988 in Scarborough by Ed Robertson and Steven Page the Ladies quickly became a cult success in Toronto, singing folky pop-rock tunes with a flair for fun and comedy. Their self-titled 1990 cassette became the first independent Canadian release ever to be certified gold, and the lads were huge news with their lavicious band name and a popular stunt recording their tune “Be My Yoko Ono” for CityTV’s “Speakers Corner”. The band quickly received a major record deal with Reprise Records which led to their first full album Gordon released in 1992.

The band’s style evolved greatly throughout its career, and its music which began acoustic quickly grew to encompass a wide array of influences including pop, rock, hip hop, and rap although they’re most commonly billed as an “alt rock” band. Their cult following translated into immediate success with Gordon in Canada with a number of popular singles including “If I Had $1000000” and “Brian Wilson”. Their 1996 live album Rock Spectacle with live versions of “The Old Apartment” and “Brian Wilson”, and their 1998 studio album Stunt with “One Week”, helped them build huge success in the United States. Other well-known singles include “Enid”, It’s All Been Done, the lead single from Maroon, “Pinch Me” and the theme from TV’s Big Bang Theory.

Don’t miss their great first set, starting at 8pm. No cover charge – but donations at the door for the Island Jazz program are welcome.

Second set is an open jam 9:30pm to 10:20pm, so come join in! Great food menu with $5 specials, and Happy Hour drink specials to 9pm.

Island Jazz is a weekly series at Baba’s featuring top local musicians performing original music, standards, jazz and pop favourites with a featured special guest artist, followed by an open jam session. All local musicians, students and music fans are encouraged to bring an instrument and join in the second set.
